Myth: Czech is the 'Amsterdam of the East'
Truth: DO YOU SEE ANY FUCKING COFFEE SHOPS ROUND HERE? No? Exactly. Czech is NOT the Amsterdam of the fucking East. Glad we have that one out the way. If you really want to understand what this means, and cover your own ass with some knowledge, it's pretty basic. And will also make you understand why Prague is sometimes mistaken for Amsterdam. Both countries have Decriminalized cannabis use and possession. The confusion is in the word- DECRIMINALISED. All that word means is 'cease to treat (something) as illegal or as a criminal offence' (according to google) But decriminalization is enforced, and scaled, in different ways in different countries. So whilst the Dutch don't give a flying dutchman about weed, the Czechs simply tolerate it to some degree as long as it is not rubbed in their face. And the police can be hot and cold on the subject- take a look at this article as an example. |
OKOK, what the fuck does that mean to me on the street?
The law here is pretty simple. Covered by Regulation No. 467/2009. It is CRYSTAL CLEAR that it is classed as a MISDEMEANOR to have in your possession per person, the following amount of dope:
10 GRAMS of Weed
5 GRAMS of Hashish
Possession of which can lead to an on the spot fine of 15,000 Czech Crowns.
That is all. Selling, attempting to sell, even offering someone a smoke on your joint can TECHNICALLY be classed as 'possession for another person' which moves into the realms of criminality.....

Simply put most people have NO problem with possession, the police mostly chase large scale growers. However as a tourist you need to remember not to push the boundaries of smoking etiquette and remember to stay safe. I don't encourage you to try what this guy is doing in the photo..... This is what a Marijuana possession fine looks like in Prague, and this is the difference between here and Amsterdam- it CAN happen (see date 10th October 2014). The person who was fined was carrying 5 grams, and had to pay 1000kc (40 euros, 50 dollars) as a fine and lost his weed (1500kc street value) so basically, $200 lighter for his visit but NOT arrested or jailed.
